Copyright issue continues to haunt the much anticipated remak of 1973's blockbuster 'Zanjeer'. The writers of the original film Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar have been fighting against the producers of Zanjeer's remake since day one. They recently met the producers at a meeting held at Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) office last week with members of the Dispute Settlement Committee (DSC).
Though remakes are not new in Bollywood, the issues of copyright did came before but the makers amicably sorted it out with the writers. Report has it that the producers of 'Don' — The Chase Begins Again (2006) too had paid them 1 crore before doing the remake of 1978 film 'Don'.
As of now since the copyright issue of 'Zanjeer' is Sub Judice, no decision was made by DSC, but it learnt that Salim and Javed are the rightful owners of the script, after observing the documents provided by the duo. The writers of the film have been demanding royalty of Rs 6 crore as compensation. The High Court is likely to give its verdict on the issue on March 25th.
