Unmindful of the ongoing opposition agitations by opposition parties, the government gave another electric shock to the people. The Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERC) has issued the new tariff for the year 2013-14 on Saturday afternoon.
The telescopic system was continued in the new tariff in which consideration was shown to the consumers using less than 50 units. For others the charges were increased by 23 percent. The new tariff would come into force from Monday.
However ERC has not made any changes in the charges on agriculture. People would be burdened by about Rs. 6,500 crores with the new tariff. The ERC converted the present 6 slabs into 10 slabs for domestic consumers. Earlier there was a slab for 100 units. This was reduced to 50 units now.
Now as per the new tariff, domestic consumers using less than 50 units would be charged Rs. 1.45 as charges. From 51 to 100 units it would be Rs 2.60, from 101 to 150 units, the charges would be Rs. 3.25, from 151 to 200 units Rs. 4.88, from 201 to 250 units Rs. 5.63, 251 to 300 units Rs. 6.38.
Those who consume between 301 to 400 units would be charged Rs 7.38 paise, those using 401 to 500 units Rs. 7.88 and those who consume more than 500 would have to pay Rs. 8.28.
Industries would have to pay Rs. 6.88 per unit. However there is no change in the present terms with regard to supply of power to the agriculture sector. People would have to bear a burden of Rs. 6,500 crore due to the new tariff additionally.
