Yash Raj films has always been associated with very interesting scripts in the past. Continuing with the trend, YRF has taken over the distribution rights of the latest comedy caper in Mere Dad Ki Maruthi. Starring the very talented Ram Kapoor and new comers Saqib Saleem and Rhea Chakraborthy, this film has finally hit the screens today. Lets see how it is.
Story:
Sameer(Saqib Saleem) is a happy go lucky Chandigarh boy who always ends up in trouble with his mischievous behavior. He always fears his dad(Ram Kapoor) who is very strict by nature. Sameer has a huge crush on his college sweet heart Jazleen( Rhea Chakraborthy) and always tries to woo her hard. One fine day Sameer somehow manages to ask Jazleen out, and promises to pick her up in the evening.
To create a good impression on his girl, Sameer takes his dad’s new Maruti Ertiga car which he had bought for his daughters wedding. He manages to sneak the car without his dad’s notice and has a good time with his sweetheart. One his way back, an uncanny incident happens and Sameer manages to loose the car. Rest of the story is as to how Sameer manages to face his angry father, and also finds his lost car back.
Positive Points:
The story of the film is quite interesting and is based over a period of two days. Debutant Saqib Saleem makes a decent debut and is impressive in the role of Sameer. Ram Kapoor plays looks apt in the role of a angry father and brings a lot of weight to the film. Prabal Punjabi, who plays the hero’s sidekick does an awesome job in the movie. He is the sole comic relief in the film and is quite brilliant with Hinglish slang.
Lead actress Rhea Chakraborthy plays her part well and aptly supports the main lead. The whole film lays emphasis on the story rather than the performances. The flow of the film is swift and the first half is quite interesting.
Negative Points:
Though, Mere Dad Ki Maruthi has an interesting story, the whole film could have been showcased more tightly. As you think the movie is going good at a point, it loses its steam. It is more or less like a roller coaster ride where one good scene is followed by another bad one.
Ravi Kishen’s role has no substance and has been wasted in the film. The situations, scenes and logic’s in the movie are not so convincing. Many cinematic liberties have been taken to make the film more commercial. Without them the film could have been more interesting
Technical Points:
Mere Dad Ki Mauthi is technically very strong. All the technical aspects have been taken care of well. Songs of the movie, especially Punjabia Di Battery is quite good. Background score of the movie is very impressive as it makes you engrossed in the whole film. Dialogues need a special mention as some fun one liners have been written well.
Camera work is very decent and shows the typical Punjabi household well. The look of the movie is apt and Chandigarh city and locations have been used brilliantly. Screen play of the movie is good in most parts, but falters in the end. Director Ashima Chabbir makes this film in a limited screen time and narrates the whole script aptly. The scenes between the hero and his friend have been shot exceptionally well by the director.
Verdict:
On the whole, Mere Dad Ki Maruthi is one film, which has its shares of highs and lows. A simple story line and a smooth flow of the film are sure hot plus points. On the flip side. a weak star cast and some dragged out scenes go against the film. Finally, Mere Dad Ki Maruti is a safe car in which you can go in for a ride once.
