Opposition lashes out at govt on Babli

The all-party meeting called by the government on the Babli project issue ended on Thursday afternoon.

Speaking later to the media, TDP senior leader Errabelli Dayakara Rao said the Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy told them that the government would wage a legal fight on the issue. He said the Chief Minister also told them that the government would take legal opinion on filing a review petition on the recent judgment of the Supreme Court. He also assured that the government would take the suggestions of the opposition parties into consideration and hold another all-party meeting.

Sri Hari said they demanded that the three-member committee appointed to oversea the project should work under the purview of the central government and not function from the Maharashtra state. The TDP told the government that construction of a project as an integral part of another project was unheard of. Kadiyam said they enlightened the government on its follies with regard to the Babli project.

Kadiyam said they also demanded that an all-party delegation should be taken to the Prime Minister to apprise him of facts. He has charged the government of not being able to effectively argue before the Supreme Court, resulting in the state losing its case. He expressed anger that Maharashtra was using 100 tmc of water instead of the 60 tmc allotted to it.

CPI (M) MLA Julakanti Ranga Reddy said they had suggested that efforts should be made for a political solution even while continuing the legal fight.
