Hyderabad, March 21: The raging power crisis in the state affecting various sectors short-circuited the proceedings in the Assembly with Telugu Desam members protesting and demanding an immediate discussion in the House.
As the slogan shouting TDP members continued to demonstrate near the podium despite Speaker Nadendla Manohar’s request to allow the proceedings, the House was adjourned within 15 minutes.
Earlier the Speaker disallowed five adjournment motions moved by the opposition parties – TDP’s motion on power crisis, YSRCP on steep hike in prices of essential commodities, CPI on Sadak Bandh, BJP for a resolution on Telangana and CPM for revival of welfare board for hamalis.
Immediately the TDP and YSRCP members got from their seats and protested that the House should take up their adjournment motions and deliberate them as they were very important issues concerning the people. The Speaker pointed out to the protesting members that these issues were already listed for discussion under Rule 344 and hence appealed to them to resume their seats and allow the business listed in the agenda to commence.
The Minister for Legislature Affairs D. Sridhar Babu was aghast that despite coming to an understanding at the BAC on the issues that would be taken up for discussion in the House and the government was ready to reply on the same, the opposition parties were stalling the proceedings and wasting the precious time.
The Speaker as well as the Legislature Minister pointed out that five important issues including the power crisis, drinking water problem, rise in prices of essential commodities etc were identified for taking up and discuss in the House one after another.
Hence the Speaker appealed to the agitating members to resume their seats and allow the question hour to begin. While the YSRCP members relented and sat down, the TDP members continued to protest.
TDP’s Deputy leader Muddu Kirishnama Naidu asserted that the party had identified as, many as 18 issues con concerning the people for deliberation in the House. Besides the power crisis which was affecting supply of drinking water, industrial production and putting the students to hardship during exam time, the Babli issue was also very important for deliberating.
The Minister for Legislature Affairs explained that an allp-party meeting was being convened by the Minister for Irrigation to discuss the Babli project controversy and then the same would be taken up in the House. However, the TDP members remained firm in wanting the Babli issue to be taken up forthwith.
Thereupon an exasperated Speaker adjourned the House till 10 am which dragged on till 10.30 am when it reassembled. The questions listed for the day once again got postponed.
