After making a string of films with Abhishek Bachchan, filmmaker Rohan Sippy is back with some onscreen drama in Nautanki Saala. Starring Ayushmann Khurrana, Kunaal Roy Kapur, Pooja Salvi and Gaelyn Mendonca, this movie is the official remake of the French film APRES VOUS. Slated to hit the screens tomorrow, let’s take a look at what the film has in store for its viewers.
Story:
Ram Parmar aka RP (Ayushmann Khurrana) is a theatre actor and director, of a successful play titled Ravaanleela. While Ram plays the malevolence Ravaan on stage, he is a pleasant spirit off-stage who often helps everyone out of trouble. Due to this humble nature, RP ends up saving Mandar Lele (Kunal Roy Kapur) who tries to commit suicide.
RP gets so occupied in giving Mandar his life and love back, that he starts ignoring his girlfriend Chitra (Gaelyn Mendonca). While in the process of getting Mandar’s love, Nandani (Pooja Salvi) back to his life, Ram in turn falls in love with her. Will Ram to able to give Mandar his love and life back? Will Mandar be able to assimilate the feeling that his BFF has for his love? That forms the rest of the story.
Plus Points:
Nautanki Saala is neither as fresh and witty as Vicky Donor nor as slapstick as Delhi Belly. However Rohan Sippy manages to portray a different kind of fun with this one. Ayushmann hits the target ones again with his natural comedy. Kunal Roy Kapur plays a lonely guy with ease and is extremely witty in a few scenes.
VJ turned actress Gaelyn Mendonca has a strong potential to be an actress. She plays her part well. Special mention goes to Sanjeev Bhatt, who plays the drama producer. This man brings in immense humor with his mammoth talent. He cracks everyone up in each of his scenes.
Another character who plays an unknown man whom Ram meets at the restaurant is the one to watch out for. His expressions are more than enough for the viewers to drop down laughing. Nautanki Saala has a few extremely unsullied and amusing moments that makes it a pleasurable watch.
Minus Points:
Nautanki Saala has more drama than we all can anticipate. Apart from Gaelyn Mendonca, the other two leading ladies are nothing more than a useless addition to the film. Pooja Salvi doesn’t have the looks or the talent to play a lead role. Evelyn’s presence is worthless as she brings no good to the film.
One would presume the movie to be all about stage shows, however Rohan’s attempt is more about off-screen Nautanki than an on-screen one. The scenes between Ayushman and Pooja and his frequent visit to Pooja’s flower show, are plain cheesy and could have easily been chopped off. The pace of the movie drops down by the second half and becomes dreary at one point.
Technical Aspects:
Just like too many cooks spoil the broth, too many songs can easily spoil the film. The second half of the film is induced with frequent songs that ruin the fun. Saddi Galli, sung by Ayushmann himself is soothing and best of all. Cinematographer Manoj Lobo has done a splendid job by capturing the true essence of the theatre.
Editing could have been improved, while the screenplay is just about fine. While the first half of the film brings in some amazing humorous moments, the second half is only good in parts. The story has been portrayed to an extent that it tires out the audience patience.
Final Word:
On the whole, Nautanki Saala has some hilarious dramebaazi and on the flip side, an extended and dragged out story line goes against the film. Give this film a shot to enjoy a few good performances by some extremely talented actors. A one time watch.
