Kolkata: About 2,000 protestors, agents of the Saradha Group flocked outside West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's residence demanding to meet her. After hours of chaos, some of the campaigners were arrested while others were forced to evacuate the area.
Chit fund company Saradha Group is said to have collected crores of money from people with promises of huge returns. Lately, several of the group's cheques have been bouncing and many offices across the state have shut down. The chairman Sudipto Sen is absconding.
Gourang Bit, one of the agents, requesting CM to intervene said, "We are left with no option but to commit suicide. I have run away from home three four days ago and have not been able to return because the investors are waiting there to beat me up".
Mr Sen is reported to be in close connection with Ms Banerjee's Trinamool Congress. A party MP Kunal Ghosh was designated Group CEO of Saradha's media interests. However, he later declared that he was just a "salaried employee" and looked after the "editorial" department.
Mr Sen put up the first closure notice at English newspaper, 'Bengal Post' office on March 26 followed by several other publications.
