Amitabh was born to the renowned Hindi poet Harivanshrai Bachchan in 1942. He was initially named Inquilaab and then later his father changed the name to Amitabh. He made his film debut in 1969 as a narrator in Mrinal Sen’s critically acclaimed ‘Bhuvan Shome’. Thereafter, he got his first acting role as one of the seven protagonists in ‘Saat Hindustani’.
Amitabh rose to stardom with the blockbuster hit Deewar in 1973 and incidentally, this was the same year he also married Jaya Bachchan. The couple starred in many films out of which ‘Abhimaan’ was released only a month after their marriage. With Deewar’, Amitabh became the pioneer who brought in the angry young man image to Hindi films.
Amitabh gave some of the biggest hits with Manmohan Desai, Prakash Mehra and Yash Chopra. Some of his iconic films include Sholay, Hum, Deewar, Shehanshah, Baghban, Amar Akbar Anthony and Paa.
After being for over four decades in the industry, Amitabh is considered one of the first superstars who was successful both in India and abroad. Now after all these years of films and television, Amitabh is truly a legend for not only Hindi films but also a matter of pride for all Indians.
