First Nirbhaya case in AP: 22 year jail for rape

Medak, March 22: The Nirbhaya Act brought into force after the ghastly gang rape and murder of a medico in Delhi was for the first time implemented in our state in the entire country.

Sangareddy court in Medak district gave a sensational judgment under the act in a rape case. The court sentenced the accused in a rape case to 22 years of imprisonment.

One Pintoo Yadav of Bihar raped a SC girl of Ilapur Tanda under Patancheru mandal in May 2011. The court sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment in the rape case and 12 years under the SC, ST Atrocity Act. The accused is presently in the Charlapalli jail as an under trial.

Case was registered against Yadav (22) in the IDA Bollaram police station. He would have to serve 22 years of prison sentence in the rape case.

It may be recalled that the Nirbhaya Act was recently introduced in the Parliament. When the opposition parties suggested some amendments to the bill, the government amended the draft and introduced the amended version. It was adopted by the Parliament, making it a law. The Sangareddy court was the first in the entire country to sentence an accused under the new law.

The gang-rape and murder of Nirbhaya on December 16 in Delhi caused a country-wide furor. Several women and student organizations took up agitations, demanding hanging of the accused. The ghastly incident also brought into sharp focus the need for amending the existing laws to offer more deterrent punishment in rape cases. After the death of Nirbhaya, the government brought this stringent act and named it after the victim.
