‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ (YJHD) can easily be slated as one of the most awaited films in recent times. Ranbir’s star power, Karan Johar’s rich production values, Deepika’s looks and chemistry with Ranbir were some of the appealing factors for this film. Directed by Ayan Mukherjee of ‘Wake Up Sid’ fame, YJHD also stars Aditya Roy Kapoor and Kalki Koechlin in other lead roles. Slated as Ranbir Kapoor’s biggest release, this film has released in more than 3000 screens worldwide. Let’s see whether it lives up to its huge expectations that it generated.
Story:
Bunny (Ranbir Kapoor), Aditi (Kalki) and Avi (Aditya Kapoor) are childhood friends from school who plan a trekking trip to Manali so that they can have a great time. Just before they start, Aditi meets her classmate Naina (Deepika Padukone) and tells her about the trip. An upset Naina, who is bugged with her hectic life as a medical student, also decides to join the Manali trip which she views as a welcome break.
During the trip Naina is charmed by the wit and persona of Bunny and her outlook towards life changes completely as she gradually falls in love with him. Naina decides to confess about her love to Bunny at the end of the trip and just as she gets ready to propose, she finds out that Bunny is leaving to the US and does not believe in any relationships. A depressed Naina takes a step back and hides her feelings.
Eight years pass by and Bunny returns to India for Aditi’s wedding where he meets all his old friends. He is quite surprised to see a new and confident Naina and interestingly things take a u-turn when Bunny develops feelings for Naina. The rest of the story is whether a selfish and career oriented Bunny chooses his career or follows the dictates of his heart.
Plus Points:
As expected, YJHD is full of fun and masti throughout its running time. As with most Karan Johar productions, there are grand song and dance sequences, romance and most importantly a big fat wedding. YJHD focus on the aspect about ‘coming of age’ for every youngster.
Ranbir and Deepika showcase a sizzling chemistry and are perfect for the film’s mood. Ranbir takes the cake once again by dominating the entire film with his sheer screen presence and backs it with a mature performance. His character which is quirky, charming, selfish and yet and so lovable is played with ease while he also showcases his dancing skills and proves that he is a complete actor. Deepika Padukone once again delivers a superb performance initially as the shy Naina and then transforming into a confident woman. She is growing in confidence with each film and is choosing roles with a difference.
Aditya Rao Kapoor, who is currently basking in the glory of 100 crore hit ‘Aashiqui 2’, has an important role and he carries it off with a lot of ease. Kalki Koechlin provides the humor quotient to the film. Apart from than the sizzling performances, YJHD has some cute and heart touching moments. Romantic scenes between Deepika and Ranbir are sketched out with a lot of freshness. The songs are a major highlight as YJHD will have a repeat audience only for its music.
Minus Points:
Though everything about the film is picture perfect, the director could have chopped off some scenes since the movie is a bit too long. Some of the scenes in the second half like the Sangeet function sequence could have been edited more crisply. The climax also drags for some time and is very predictable. Some aspects about Deepika’s character are missing in the film. Another thing is that while everyone’s look in the second half changes to some extent, Ranbir looks the same which is a bit unbelievable.
Technical Aspects:
Music is a major asset for the film with the songs already topping the charts and these songs will only grow on the audience when they watch the film. Badtameez Dil, Balam Pichkari and Subanallah are trend setters and will be immensely like by the audience. The lyrics are quirky and romantic. The first half of the film is based in Manali and the cinematography beautifully captures the scenic beauty.
Another major highlight of the film is the screenplay and direction. Young director Ayan Mukherjee takes a simple story and narrates it with his interesting screenplay. The way he has captured Deepika and Ranbir’s chemistry or the bond between the best friends is commendable. Both his films have showcased human emotions and have something for different age groups.
Final Word:
Overall, ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ is a film that has everything from music, dance, romance and human emotions. The sizzling chemistry between Ranbir and Deepika and the foot-tapping music will be immensely loved by everyone. Finally, YJHD is lovable and most importantly filled with lots of fun and masti. A must watch for everyone.
