On the way to his wedding, Raghu meets Gayatri (Parineeti Chopra) and instantly connects with her and leaves his own wedding midway.
Gayatri and Raghu start getting close to each other and eventually start living together. As in every relationship, problems are bound to exist and the same happens between Raghu and Gayatri. At a certain point, the couple part ways and a disappointed Raghu moves on with his life.
One fine day, while on his way to yet another wedding, Raghu bumps into Tara (Vaani Kapoor) who is the girl he was planning to get married too earlier. Raghu confesses to Tara about the reasons for running away from his wedding. Soon enough, Tara develops a liking towards Raghu and the couple start seeing each other. When everything is going smooth, Gayatri makes a re-entry into their lives.
How does Raghu react? How does he confront Gayatri? And finally whom does he end up with between Gayatri and Tara? The answers to all these questions form the rest of the story.
Plus Points:
Jaideep Sahni’s script and Maneesh Sharma’s direction is wonderful and it holds your attention. The concepts of living-in and marriage have been dealt in a very contemporary manner. Sushant Singh is a revelation and his performance is spot-on as he plays the role of a confused lover with utmost ease. With ‘Shuddh Desi Romance’, Bollywood definitely has another heartthrob in the form of Sushant.
Parineeti Chopra makes her character of a girl with modern values look believable. She is suited for her role and delivers a solid performance. Debutante Vaani Kapoor is here to stay with this model turned actress not only has the looks but also the acting talent. Vaani is superb in the role of Tara and brings a fresh feel to the whole film.
Sushant’s chemistry with both Parineethi and Vaani Kapoor is top class. The first half is very colorful and moves at a brisk pace. The movie will surely have a repeat audience for its foot- tapping music.
Minus Points:
After a pacy first half, the last 15 minutes of the film seem to be stretched slightly. The film is clearly made for its target audience which would be the youth of India and so the family audiences might not connect with certain concepts of the film.
Sushant Singh’s character in the second lacks clarity and the conflict as his mind wanders between the two girls has not been showcased clearly. Single screen viewers do not have much to look out for in terms of item songs and other masala elements. Also, the way the climax has been showcased might surprise a few.
Technical Aspects:
Shuddh Desi Romance has some of the best cinematography in recent times. The way the city of Jaipur and its colors have been showcased is beautiful. The entire set-up looks perfect and contemporary. As mentioned earlier, the music is the highlight of the film. The editing is neat and so is the background score.
The screenplay of the film is a big plus and the way the scenes have been narrated and executed is top-class. Though it is throwback to old school triangular love story, the way Maneesh has handled it is commendable. In a novel way, the film has showcased the manner in which today’s youth thinks about relationships and marriage.
Verdict:
Overall, Shuddh Desi Romance has everything what the younger generation expects from a film. The sizzling chemistry between the lead stars, awesome songs and a simple yet novel story makes this film definitely worth a watch.
