Filmmaker Vikram Bhatt dons the writer hat in this week’s release which is ‘Ankur Arora Murder Case’. This medical thriller film is supposedly based on some real life incidents and is directed by Suhail Tatari and features Kay Kay Menon, Tisca Chopra and Pauli Dam in lead roles. The movie is set to hit the theaters this Friday and we are bringing you an exclusive review well in advance. Let’s see how the film is.
Story:
Dr. Asthana (Kay Kay Menon), a Chief surgeon at the Shekhawat General Hospital, is a self-proclaimed doctor who openly claims to be the best in the country. Ankur, an eight year old boy, is admitted to the hospital by his mother Nandita (Tisca Chopra) after he complains of a recurring severe stomach ache. While being operated by Dr. Asthana, Ankur dies of a minor medical negligence. All hell breaks loose and the hospital staff quietly try to hide the fact from the world and Nandita that the death happened due to the doctor’s negligence.
Romesh (Arjun Mathur), an intern in the hospital, decides to fight against this misdeed along with his colleague Vishaka by going to the courts. Their side of the case is taken up by a lawyer named Kajori Sen (Paoli Dam).
The rest of the story is whether Romesh succeeds in fighting the case against the corrupt people in his hospital and also if Nandita gets justice for her son’s mysterious death.
Positive Points:
Director Suhail Tatari, who has earlier been associated with a not-so-famous ‘Summer Of 2007’, has brought out very good performances from his cast. His direction is up to the mark as he narrates an unconventional and unique story. Speaking of performances, Kay Kay Menon plays a rigid and conceited doctor with his usual ease.
Tisca Chopra is extremely convincing as the mother of a murdered child. Arjun Mathur is impressive and delivers a power-packed performance while Vishaka Singh is decent in her scenes. The hot and happening Pauli Dam of ‘Hate Story’ steals the show with her strong portrayal of a focused lawyer.
Negative Points:
Even though Kay Kay Menon delivers a firm performance, his acting gets monotonous after a while. His rigidness is too much to handle and does not look authentic after a point. Vishaka, being a talented actress, has been wasted completely as she has nothing to offer. She is crying for most of the time in the entire duration.
The first half of the film is so stretched that it leaves no room for imagination while the second half is wrapped up hastily keeping the audience weary and perplexed at the same time.
Technical Aspects:
Only a few of songs in the film are just about OK and even those do not fit anywhere in the plot. The director could have easily done away with the songs totally. Cinematography is laudable as the camera very effectively covers the hospital and its surroundings. The editing is just about OK and the screenplay is plausible and up to the mark.
Also, the dialogues are interspersed with too many medical terms which may not get through to the general audience easily. However, Vikram Bhatt’s attempt is admirable as he has undergone a huge lot of research to understand and use the medical terminology to make the story seem authentic.
Final Word:
Overall, ‘Ankur Arora Murder Case’ is a story that delivers a strong social message but fails in the attempt due to its poor execution. The movie may get tedious at a point but can be given a shot only for its strong and laudable performances.
